Press Releases - 29.09.2022
Less than half of the residents have already turned on the heating at home
Especially gas consumers currently prefer to stay warm by using a blanket or consuming warm drinks.
Working from an office at home increases the likelihood that residents will heat their homes sooner
Eschborn, September 29, 2022 – Although the official heating period does not begin until October, some places have already seen the first frost on the ground. So it makes sense to turn up the heating now to heat your home to a comfortable temperature. However, the current energy crisis and the explosion in energy prices mean that a quarter of people in Germany are still hesitant about heating (24 percent). This is the result of a recent survey by the energy service provider Techem.
The energy source and the time of day determine the heating behavior
More than half of those surveyed have refrained from turning on the heating (54 percent) despite the cold nights. In particular, residents with gas heating show a lower “premature” willingness to heat (42 percent) than people who use other energy sources (50 percent). On the other hand, those who work in their office at home are more likely to turn up the heating at home (57 percent) than people who regularly go to the office (44 percent). And regardless of whether they work from home or not, people currently heat their homes mainly in the evening (76 percent).
Uncertainty over the costs burdens residents
Out of uncertainty over the level of heating costs (31 percent) or fear of high additional payments (32 percent), three-quarters of residents prefer to reach for warmer clothing (79 percent) or a blanket (75 percent) instead of turning up the radiators. However, the climate crisis (18 percent) and the desire to become independent of Russian gas (15 percent) also motivate people to forgo heating for the time being. Some respondents try to stay warm by drinking warm drinks (38 percent) or lighting candles (21 percent). And some even go to bed earlier instead (14 percent). Yet before the current energy crisis, nearly half of them would have already turned on the heating at this point in the year and in view of the current temperatures (49 percent).
