“Smart meter: A key element of the energy transition” – Gero Lücking, Head of Smart Metering at Techem, on the adoption of the law to relaunch the digitalization of the energy transition

Eschborn, May 12, 2023 - The digitization of the building stock is a key element of the energy transition. Intelligent metering systems or so-called smart meters make an important contribution to this. As part of the digital infrastructure, they create the basis for an energy system that is largely climate-neutral and optimized for sector coupling. Smart meters provide the information needed to reconcile fluctuating generation with the consumption of heat pumps, for example, and to better integrate them into the power grid. In addition, smart meters establish renewable energies on a broad scale.

With today’s adoption of the Act to Restart the Digitalization of the Energy Transition (GNDEW) by the Bundesrat, the Upper House of the German Parliament has now cleared the way for an accelerated and urgently needed rollout of these smart metering systems. Gero Lücking, Head of Smart Metering at Techem, comments as follows:

“The benefits of smart metering systems for the real estate industry are obvious. They form the cornerstone for efficient processes, greater transparency in consumption, costs and emissions, and thus for the reduction of energy consumption. As such, they go hand in hand with the legislative objective of accelerating the digitalization of the energy transition. With the simplifications that have now been adopted and the fairer distribution of costs, there is no longer any reason not to rely on smart metering systems and thus invest in the digitalization of this infrastructure.

In order to create synergies and be able to operate across all sectors, Techem, as a competitive metering point operator, offers smart metering in combination with submetering. We thus combine the approach that the legislator is pushing for in the area of electricity with digital gas meters. Smart meters thus create the prerequisite for implementing key reporting requirements across all commodities, such as recurring ESG reporting, and thus lay the foundation for greater energy efficiency in buildings.

All business models of the energy transition that are aimed at increasing efficiency and avoiding emissions in existing and new buildings are closely linked to the rollout of smart metering systems. The digitalization of electricity and gas meters is therefore the basis of strategic, targeted action on the path to a climate-neutral building stock and thus to achieving our climate targets.”
