The high energy consumption in the building sector contributes to the fact that it regularly fails to meet its politically set climate targets. In order to achieve these targets and the overarching goal of a climate-neutral building stock, digitalization of the sector is a key lever. The failed climate targets of the building sector

To date, the real estate sector has failed to meet its politically set climate targets year after year - for the third time in a row in 2023: 

  • At 122 million metric tons of CO₂-equivalents, the sector is 4.6 million metric tons above the permissible target set by the Federal Climate Protection Act (KSG). 

  • This is despite the fact that emissions fell by 5.3 percent compared to the previous year due to higher energy prices and a mild winter.

The path to a sustainable real estate sector

The urgently needed drastic reduction of CO₂-emissions is a complex task.

Research by Techem shows that various modules are necessary to sustainably reduce final energy consumption in existing buildings. These include optimal settings and monitoring of systems technology for heating and hot water, the establishment of renewable energies on a broad scale, and the involvement of tenants.

The results of the BaltBest research project reveal that the permanently optimized operation of a boiler alone – supported by digital monitoring and control technology - saves energy. And user behavior geared to saving energy can reduce energy consumption even further.
